Sweetgrass Basket Making Class - May 11th

Make a traditional sweetgrass basket with your own hands under the guidance of master basket maker Vera Manigault on Saturday, May 11th, from 11 am to 1 pm ET at the Gullah Museum in Georgetown, SC. Vera's family has created these vessels of memory for eight generations. Gullah Geechees have made sweetgrass baskets for centuries in a style that is identical to the coil baskets of West and Central Africa. The class fee is $60—all materials needed to make a basket are included. The maximum number of participants is 14 .Here is the link to buy tickets :


Book Talk and Signing with Author Ron Daise - May 10th

The Gullah Museum will host a book talk and signing with Author and Gullah Cultural Interpreter, Ron Daise, for his new novel, “Raptors in the Ricelands,” on May 10th at 5:30 p.m. The book is set in a fictionalized community in Georgetown, S.C.

Ron Daise, a son of St. Helena Island, SC, is an author, performing artist, educator, and cultural interpreter. Daise is known by many as ‘Mr. Ron’ from Gullah Gullah Island, a the Nick Jr. TV award-winning children’s program of the 1990s. Daise also is a former chairman of the federal Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission and currently serves on the Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies Advisory Board.

Come enjoy an inspiring reading of excerpts and a slice of Mr. Ron’s Gullahlicious Pound Cakes! This event is presented by the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor NHA and The Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce - Georgetown, S.C., and the Gullah Museum!

A FREE copy of this book will be provided to the 1st fifteen individuals/families to register for event! Registration is NOT REQUIRED for general entry.


Mayfest on Black River - May 18

Join us at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 18, 2024, for the 3rd Annual Mayfest on the Black River! Located at Richard’s Landing, Fuzzy Drive, Georgetown, S.C., Mayfest celebrates Gullah Geechee culture and will have lots of fun, food, and family-friendly activites, music, artists, spoken word, and more! Bulls Bay Nature Festival - May 18th

The Gullah Museum’s Beatrice Rodrigues is giving a talk on in Gullah Geechee history and culture—Discover Gullah Geechee Culture—at 12 p.m. ET during the Bulls Bay Nature Festival on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, 5821 North Highway 17, Awendaw, S.C.

Learn about the unique history and distinctive arts, crafts, foodways, music and culture of the Gullah Geechee during this Gullah Museum presentation. This talk includes one of the museum’s famous 3D folk art quilts that tell the story of the Gullah Geechee people, their African ancestors, and how they helped shape America. Located in the historic heart of Georgetown, S.C., the Gullah Museum has been featured on numerous local and national TV and radio programs, newspapers, and magazines.

Georgetown Art & Wine Walk

The Gullah Museum is among the venues participating in Georgetown Art & Wine Walk 2024 on Saturday, June 15-16, in our historic downtown! Georgetown, S.C.! Organized by the Georgetown Business Association, this annual event invites visitors to enjoy living and interactive art displays, juried 2D & 3D art and photography and digital art exhibits, an open-air art fair, kids’ art projects, local artists painting live, and live music!
